Field formations

Crop circles

Overnight patterns pressed into fields of wheat and barley. Some were made by two men with a plank. Some people swear others were not. Here are the famous ones, the story so far, and the ones our members have found.

Confessed

The plank-and-rope classic

Southern England · 1976–1991

In 1991 Doug Bower and Dave Chorley told a newspaper they had been making circles since 1976 with a plank, a length of rope and a wire sight on a cap. Simple rings and satellite circles like these were their signature.

151 circles

Julia Set

Opposite Stonehenge, Wiltshire · July 1996

A spiral of 151 circles shrinking out from one big one, seen beside the busy A303. Some witnesses said the field was empty that afternoon. Skeptics say it was made the night before and simply spotted late.

409 circles

Milk Hill galaxy

Milk Hill, Wiltshire · August 2001

Six curving arms of 409 circles, roughly 240 metres across, on a steep hillside. Still one of the biggest and most complex formations ever recorded.

A message back?

The Arecibo reply

Chilbolton, Hampshire · August 2001

Next to the Chilbolton radio telescope, a block of pixels that looked like the 1974 Arecibo radio message sent to space, but with the details changed, as if someone was answering it.

Binary warning

Crabwood face

Crabwood, near Winchester · August 2002

A grey alien face holding a disc. Read as 8-bit binary, the spiral on the disc spelled out a warning about "bearers of false gifts" and "broken promises".

3.141592654

Barbury Castle pi

Barbury Castle, Wiltshire · June 2008

A ratcheting spiral of ten steps. An astrophysicist noticed the step sizes encode the first ten digits of pi, with a small dot for the decimal point.

The story so far

  1. 1678An English pamphlet, "The Mowing-Devil", shows the devil cutting a farmer’s oats in neat circles overnight. It is often called the first crop circle story.
  2. 1966A farmer in Tully, Queensland, reports a "saucer nest": a ring of flattened reeds in a lagoon, after seeing a craft rise from it.
  3. 1976Doug Bower and Dave Chorley make their first circle in Hampshire, by their own account. Simple circles start turning up across southern England.
  4. 1991The two men go public and show reporters how it is done. Circles do not stop. They get bigger and stranger.
  5. 1990s–2000sWiltshire becomes the capital of crop circles. Fractals, galaxies, codes and faces appear near Stonehenge, Avebury and the old hill forts.
  6. TodayMany designs are art projects or adverts, shot from drones. The mystery fans are still out there every summer, checking for the one nobody can explain.
